Australia announces squad for Ashes series 2009 | Ashes Series

Australian selectors have announced 16 man squad for Ashes series which is staring from July 2009 at Sophia Gardens in Cardif and finishes at The Oval in the August. Ashes series includes five test matches against England. Controversial all-rounder Andrew Symonds was a notable omission from Australia’s squad for this year’s Ashes cricket tour to England. It could mean the end of the Test road for Symonds, who turns 34 next month.
The 16 man squad includes three all-rounders Shane Watson, Andrew McDonald and Marcus North but no place for Andrew Symonds, he has played 26-Test matches and has not played for Australia since last year’s Boxing Day Test against South Africa. Watson was named subject to fitness after sustaining a minor groin injury in the recent limited-over series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates.
The 16 man Australian squad will be led by Ricky Ponting with Michael Clarke as his deputy. Australian squad includes six-strong pace attack headed by Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee and Stuart Clark. Opening batsman Phillip Hughes is the youngster of the tourists at 20, and comes into the Ashes series on the back of scoring four centuries during a recent six-week English county guest stint with Middlesex.
